Scott Frost hopes Adrian Martinez will be remembered as ‘greatest’ QB to play at Nebraska

Saying Scott Frost has high expectations for quarterback Adrian Martinez would be an understatement. And recently, the Nebraska head coach revealed just how great he thinks the rising sophomore can be over his collegiate career.
After a sensational freshman year — throwing for 2,617 yards, rushing for 629 more and accounting for 25 total touchdowns — Martinez has gained some serious Heisman hype. He’s currently at +600 to win college football’s most prestigious award, some of the best odds in the country.
That early hype isn’t all that surprising to Frost.
“Adrian, from the minute I met him, I knew he was a special kid,” Frost said during the Husker Sports Nightly radio show. “We had a decision to make coming out of spring ball and coming out of fall camp on who our guy was going to be at quarterback. Our staff could see who he was and had an idea of what he was going to become and knew he had a chance to be really special.”
Nebraska’s 2018 campaign wouldn’t suggest that it’s home to a Heisman-caliber talent. The Huskers finished 4-8 last fall and struggled mightily in the first year of Frost’s regime. But anyone who watched Nebraska’s offense and Martinez knows just how capable he is.
Frost believes the quarterback could go down as one of the all-time greats.
“My hope is that when he leaves Nebraska, he’s thought of as one of the all-time greats at the position,” Frost said. “In fact, I hope he’s thought of as the greatest to ever play at Nebraska at that position.”
Those are pretty high expectations, considering some of the names that have rolled through Lincoln. Guys like Tommie Frazier, Eric Crouch, Turner Gill, Taylor Martinez and, of course, Frost himself.
But Martinez has certainly shown that kind of talent and ability. He’s got some high expectations heading into the 2019 season. Frost has nothing but confidence that his quarterback will handle it just fine.
