Scott Frost loves that Edge rusher Ochaun Mathis has made an early impression in Lincoln. The TCU transfer received a nice comment from his new head coach on Friday.

“Ochaun’s got elite talent and (he is) a great guy.  Maybe the best thing about getting Ochaun here is I’ve really seen Garrett (Nelson’s) and Caleb (Tannor’s) and Jimari (Butler’s) and Blaise (Gunnerson’s) game step up.”

Mathis played in 38 games over 4 seasons with the Horned Frogs. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound pass rusher registered 135 tackles, 30.5 tackles for loss, 15.5 sacks and 4 pass breakups in his TCU career. Mathis was named Second-Team All-Big 12 in 2020 and 2021. He was a 3-star recruit out of Manor High School in Texas.

Safe to say this was a big get for Frost in the transfer portal. The Huskers have been looking to boost their pass rush for quite a while.

Mathis’ accolades could make an early statement. The Huskers ranked 98th nationally in sacks in 2021, averaging 1.67 per game. Linebacker Garrett Nelson led the team with 5. Nebraska finished 3-9 and lost 6 straight games to close out the 2021 season.

Nebraska opens with Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland. Let’s see if Mathis can make a splash across the pond before his return to the states.
