Scott Frost shares the latest on Nebraska’s QB situation

The quarterback controversy at Nebraska (0-2) has yet to be resolved.
Nebraska coach Scott Frost is still deciding between junior Adrian Martinez or redshirt freshman Luke McCaffrey heading into Saturday’s home matchup vs. Penn State (0-3).
Nebraska has scored just 30 points combined in its two games.
Martinez has been Nebraska’s starting quarterback since 2018. Entering this season, Martinez had tallied 4,573 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. Martinez has gotten off to a slow start this season, as he’s amassed only 230 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.
McCaffrey, Nebraska’s backup quarterback, is the brother of Carolina Panthers star running back Christian McCaffrey.
McCaffrey completed 12 of his 16 passes last week against Northwestern in relief of Martinez. He has 148 yards and an interception this season.
“We’ll make a decision here,” Frost said via NBC Omaha’s Rex Smith. “Both guys have been competing for that and practicing to get there.”
Frost explained why he inserted McCaffrey into the game against Northwestern.
“Luke’s personality in general, he’s a spark plug. He’s just got energy that exudes out of him, and I think people rally to that. That’s kind of why we did it,” Frost said via 247Sports. “We felt like we needed a spark, and just his nature provides that spark.”
Frost describes the issues that Martinez was having.
“I think there just needs to be some decisions made a little bit quicker and more efficiently, and then just a few balls that were either errant or out of bounds that needed to be put on the money,” Frost said. “But for the most part I think it’s just processing the information quick, getting the ball out on time where it’s supposed to go at a better clip.”
Regardless of who gets the nod, Frost is confident that Nebraska can turn things around beginning on Saturday.
“We rely on them both,” Frost said. “They’ll both handle the situation well and I hope they come to compete.”
