SEC hoops program and head coach put on probation

The Texas A&M basketball program and head coach Buzz Williams have been hit with probation and a suspension from the NCAA.

Williams and the program have been hit with two years of probation while Williams is also suspended for two games during the 2021-22 basketball season. An unnamed assistant coach was also suspended for the remainder of the 2020-21 basketball season.

According to a Friday release from the NCAA, Williams maintained impermissible contact with a prospect during an evaluation period. An assistant coach also violated NCAA rules by observing a prospect workout during an open gym while on an unofficial visit. The same assistant also conducted two 45-minute tryouts with the same prospect while providing coaching instruction to the prospect.

The assistant coach also conducted approximately 24 supervised, off-campus workouts with a prospect and men’s basketball student-athletes. Texas A&M also exceeded the limit of assistant coaches allowed by using six noncoaching staff members to participate in on-court activities.
