Shelley Meyer wants her husband to be done coaching

Tuesday night’s Rose Bowl was the last time we’ll see Urban Meyer on the sidelines as the head coach at Ohio State. After making the announcement in early December that he’s stepping away from the game, the New Year’s Day game was his final one at the helm in Columbus.
Meyer is one of college football’s most accomplished coaches, winning three national titles (two at Florida, one at Ohio State) in 17 seasons. And at the young age of 54, he’s still got some good years ahead of him.
It’s reasonable, then, to think Meyer could return to the sideline if the job, and circumstances, were just right. But Meyer has said repeatedly, including after Ohio State’s victory over Washington in Pasadena, that he believes he won’t coach again.
His wife, Shelley Meyer, hopes that’s the case.
“I would be ecstatic if he didn’t (coach again),” Shelley Meyer told ESPN. “I’m done. I want him to be done. He’s too intense.”
Meyer has battled health issues throughout the season, which includes severe headaches. This season has seemed to be particularly bad, even dropping to a knee and being assisted to his feet when the Buckeyes hosted Indiana earlier this year.
Rumors and speculation will always surface. Should a good opportunity become vacant, Meyer’s name will undoubtedly be mentioned. But he’s convinced he’s coached in his last game.
If Shelley has anything to say about it, his retirement from coaching is etched in cement.
