The news that Urban Meyer will announce his retirement from Ohio State on Tuesday afternoon came as a surprise to most. While there was some speculation about his future in Columbus, he consistently said he planned to coach in 2019.
Meyer will step down as head coach following the team’s Rose Bowl Game on Jan. 1, 2019. The Buckeyes will battle Washington in Pasadena. It’s the program’s first visit since 2009 and the first time Meyer has ever coached in the game.
Offensive coordinator Ryan Day will take over as head coach at Ohio State.
Meyer accumulated a 85-9 record at Ohio State, including a 54-4 mark in B1G play. He won three B1G titles and a national championship during his career in Columbus.
Following the announcement, there were plenty of people chiming in about Meyer’s decision. Here’s how social media reacted to the news:
Urban Meyer: 82–9. A 24–0 start to his tenure. 7–0 against Michigan.
The first ever CFP championship. Seriously, find me another 3-game run from a team of yours like Ohio State had to end 2014. You can't. It's the single best 3-game streak of your life and it won't be topped.

Urban Meyer goes out with one final months-long lie.
How many times did he say he was returning next season, including just last week?

Urban Meyer could always retire up north.
He owns a whole state up there.

Several months ago I predicted Urban Meyer would step down at Ohio State this offseason, sit out a year, and then take over at USC. We'll see what happens next now.
