A Stetson University football player has died after collapsing at practice on Monday.
Nicholas Blakely, a 19-year-old sophomore, was complaining about not feeling well at practice and suddenly collapsed while standing on the sideline. An ambulance rushed him to Florida Hospital DeLand where he later died.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, Blakely’s family, teammates and coaches were notified of his death. Hatters head coach Roger Hughes informed the team.
Blakely hadn’t played in a college football game after redshirting his freshman season last fall. Stetson is scheduled to play Sacred Heart on Sept. 2.
Counselors will be made available to members of the football team as well as students at Stetson University.
