Maryland pulled off an upset of No. 7-seeded UConn on Saturday night.
The Terps won 63-54 and were able to keep the Huskies at arm’s length for most of the second half.
Maryland shot the ball extremely well — 51.2 percent from the field and 50 percent from the free throw line. That helped make up for a large disparity on the boards, which UConn won 40-29.
The Huskies grabbed 22 offensive rebounds — including 18 in the first half — but were only able to convert that into 22 second-chance points.
Eric Ayala was Maryland’s leading scorer with 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting. He also had five rebounds and two assists.
Aaron Wiggins (14 points) and Donta Scott (12 points) also finished in double figures.
Defensively, Maryland was dominant. The Terps held UConn to just 32.3 percent shooting from the field. Potential lottery pick James Bouknight scored only 15 points on 16 shots and had three turnovers.
Maryland now advances to face Alabama in the Round of 32 on Monday.
