Tate Martell reportedly seeking hardship waiver from NCAA for immediate eligibility

Tate Martell is leaving Ohio State and is headed to Miami. And if he has any luck with the NCAA, the former 4-star prospect could be taking the field for the Hurricanes in the 2019 season.
Martell’s decision to transfer to Miami came late Tuesday night, as the quarterback posted a message on Twitter. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic initially reported that Martell was anticipating sitting out the 2019 season before getting his shot in 2020.
According to a report from 247Sports, that may not be the case.
Per the report, Martell is seeking a hardship waiver from the NCAA in hopes of earning immediate eligibility. The quarterback is using Ohio State’s sudden coaching change from Urban Meyer to Ryan Day as grounds for the waiver.
Immediate eligibility would be huge for Miami, which had its issues under center in 2018.
Martell was formerly the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback and No. 56 overall player in the 2017 recruiting class. He redshirted his freshman season at Ohio State and played a limited role behind Dwayne Haskins this past season. He made the decision to leave Columbus after Georgia quarterback Justin Fields announced he was joining the Buckeyes.
Fields is also seeking a hardship waiver from the NCAA for immediate eligibility.
