Taulia Tagovailoa put on another show on Saturday as Maryland built a 28-17 lead over Rutgers at halftime.

Tagovailoa put up 298 passing yards on 16-for-20 passing for 3 touchdowns and an interception.

Tagovailoa passed Curtis Painter’s Big Ten record of 11,163 career passing yards to become the league’s all-time leader.

Entering Saturday’s game against Rutgers, Tagovailoa needed 269 yards to eclipse Painter’s record. He did so with 1:16 left in the second quarter on an 6-yard completion to Jeshaun Jones.

Tagovailoa is also Maryland’s single-season and all-time leader in both completions and passing yards. What’s more, he has a share of the single-season touchdowns record. This season, Tagovailoa leads the Big Ten in passing yards, passing yards per game, passing touchdowns and completions.

Tagovailoa has also been in the middle of a winning surge for Maryland since he transferred from Alabama ahead of the 2020 season.

In the 5 years before he arrived, Maryland failed to have a winning season. But as the starting quarterback, Tagovailoa has led the Terps to 3 straight bowl games, and that’s the first time the program has made 3 consecutive bowl appearances since 2006-08.
