The University of Minnesota will be getting $8 million to invest immediately in its Athletes Village thanks to amended sponsorship agreement with TCF Financial Corporation.
On Thursday, TCF and Minnesota announced the amendment, which will help the university modernize athletic facilities and improve the experience for student-athletes. According to GopherSports.com, TCF also has secured the option to extend the naming rights of the stadium through 2040.
All of the amendments are pending approval from the Board of Regents, which will meet on Friday.
TCF entered a 26-year, $35 million sponsorship agreement with Minnesota to supports Gophers athletic and construct a new football stadium.
Because of the generous amendment, Minnesota will also sport a field mark on the playing field with the stadium name. A new logo will also appear on scoreboards and in other areas throughout the stadium beginning in 2018.
Minnesota athletic director Mark Coyle released made the following statement:
“TCF has been an incredibly generous and supportive partner to our University and our athletics department for many years, and today’s announcement is another significant milestone in that partnership,” said Gopher Athletics Director Mark Coyle. “By contributing to Athletes Village, TCF is making a positive impact in the lives of every Gopher student-athlete and is helping our department fully fund this critical project through private contributions. I’m excited to continue our collaboration with TCF and keep the name of a great Minnesota company on TCF Bank Stadium, our community’s premier open-air sports and entertainment venue and one of the cornerstone facilities on our University’s Twin Cities campus.”
The new field marks will be visible in two weeks when the Gophers return to TCF Bank Stadium to face Middle Tennessee.
Minnesota travels to Oregon State this Saturday.
