Terry McLaurin has been embroiled in a contract dispute with the Washington Commanders, and it now appears he wants out.
The seventh-year wide receiver, who was a second-team All-Pro selection in 2024 as he formed an instant partnership with Jayden Daniels, has requested a trade, according to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
The former Ohio State WR was a third-round pick for Washington in 2019 and has developed into one of the top wideouts in the NFL, even in the middle of some lean years for the Commanders. He has totaled over 1,000 receiving yards in 6 straight seasons, including a career high 1,191 in 2022.
In 2024, McLaurin was Daniels’ primary target, making 82 catches for 1,096 yards and a career-best 11 touchdowns. One year after going 4-13, the Commanders went 12-5 en route to the NFC Championship Game, their first appearance there since the 1991 season. Their 12 wins were also the most since 1991.
But with his 3-year, $68 million rookie extension expiring after the 2025 season, McLaurin held out of the start of training camp before ultimately reporting on Sunday, albeit with an ankle injury. He was also placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
Daniels’ Offensive Rookie of the Year season and his team’s success in 2024, along with a planned move from Maryland to a new home at the site of old RFK Stadium, have expectations for the Commanders franchise as high as they’ve been in some time.
That said, unless they work out a deal with McLaurin soon, he’ll look to take his talents elsewhere.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Washington officials have stated they don’t intend to trade the receiver.
