Texas head coach Chris Beard wasn’t happy with free throw discrepancy vs. Purdue

The box score from Purdue’s 81-71 win over Texas in the Round of 32 on Sunday night will be discussed for quite some time. It was the discrepancy at the free throw line that proved to be a topic of conversation.
Purdue shot 46 free throws compared to Texas’ 12 on Sunday night. The Boilermakers outscored the Longhorns by 26 points at the charity stripe, helping lead Matt Painter’s squad to a Sweet 16 appearance.
After the game, Texas head coach Chris Beard wasn’t too happy with that 34-shot difference at the free throw line. He didn’t go into a full meltdown, but he did voice some frustration.
“The differential in the game, free throws — be careful what to say — but 46 to 12, there hasn’t been a lot of games in the NCAA Tournament like that,” Beard said. “The free throw discrepancy, it was tough.
“We know it’s a big part of Purdue’s identity. But again, 46 to 12, that’s a little frustrating.”
Painter admitted after the game that his team “lived at the free throw line,” and that Purdue “couldn’t ask for more” in an NCAA Tournament game. Because the Boilers were able to knock down 33 shots on freebies, they’ll head to Philadelphia to play St. Peter’s in the Sweet 16.
