Texas makes announcement on Tom Herman’s future as head coach

Texas football coach Tom Herman is sticking around for at least one more season.

Longhorn boosters openly courted former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer to succeed Herman, but Meyer turned them away for health reasons.

So instead of pursuing a new coach, Texas will opt to keep Herman for 2021 and avoid paying a lofty buyout.

Here’s the statement from UT athletic director Chris Del Conte, which was released to the Austin American Statesman.

“There has been a lot of speculation about the future of our football coach,” Del Conte said in a statement. “My policy is to wait until the end of the season before evaluating and commenting on our program and coaches.

“With the close of the regular season, I want to reiterate that Tom Herman is our coach.”

While that statement isn’t specific to the 2021 season, Del Conte later confirmed that Herman’s job is safe for another year. That’s per the Austin American Statesman’s Brian Davis.

Herman is 31-18 as Texas’ head coach, but the Longhorns have produced worse seasons in back-to-back years after winning 10 games and the Sugar Bowl in 2018.

With senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger expected to move on, there’s a lot of uncertainty about what Texas’ future will look like in the coming years.

Herman is a former Ohio State assistant who has also coached at Houston, Iowa State and at a number of other smaller FBS schools in Texas.
