Texas quarterback Casey Thompson has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal. Action Network’s Brett McMurphy was one of multiple outlets to report the news on Friday.
It’s significant news out of Austin, as Thompson was the starter for the Longhorns during the 2021 campaign. He played in all 12 games as Texas finished 5-7 in the first year under head coach Steve Sarkisian.

Recently, Texas signed former 5-star quarterback and Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers. It’s unclear if that signing was a factor in Thompson’s decision to explore opportunities elsewhere.
Thompson threw for 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns while completing better than 63% of his passes. He also piled up 157 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground for the Longhorns.
Some of Thompson’s best performances during the 2021 campaign came in rivalry games. He threw for 388 yards and 5 touchdowns in a loss to Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry game.
Thompson also completed 18-of-23 pass attempts for 303 yards and 5 touchdowns in a 70-35 victory over Texas Tech. He also had 6 touchdown tosses against Kansas, but the Longhorns were on the wrong side of a 57-56 decision.
Thompson will have 2 years of eligibility remaining at his next destination.
