Joe Burrow is an incredible football player. He just won the 2019 Heisman Trophy. You have to be great to bring home that award.

But, before going to LSU and accomplishing greatness, Burrow was at Ohio State. He went to Ohio State out of high school not just because it was Ohio State — he went because it was close to home.

Burrow is from Southeast Ohio, and during his Heisman speech he brought up the poverty rate around where he grew up.

“Coming from southeast Ohio it’s a very impoverished area and the poverty rate is almost two times the national average,” Burrow said. “There’s so many people there that don’t have a lot and I’m up here for all those kids in Athens and Athens County that go home to not a lot of food on the table, hungry after school. You guys can be up here, too.”

After his speech, a fundraiser was started on Facebook for the Athens County Food Pantry and as of Monday afternoon, donations have topped $150,000.

Again, Burrow’s great on the field. And winning the Heisman is spectacular. But it’s what athletes do away from the field that can make an otherworldly amount of difference.

That’s what the former Buckeye did Saturday night while accepting his Heisman Trophy.
