The debate continues: Michael Penix Jr., Sean Clifford still arguing over end on PSU-IU game

It didn’t take long for the B1G to have a season-defining moment during the 2020 season. On the opening weekend of the conference season, the finish of the Penn State-Indiana game provided one of the most controversial highlights of the year.
Hoosiers quarterback Michael Penix Jr. extended his arm toward the pylon on a 2-point conversion play while falling out of bounds, hoping to give Indiana a monumental victory in Week 1. It was ruled that Penix crossed the plain on the field and after a lengthy review, the play stood as called on the field.
Indiana defeated Penn State 36-35 in overtime. But Penix and Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford are still arguing over the end result.
During Quarterback Takeover “Flight School,” Penix and Clifford were caught reviewing and debating the famous play that pushed Indiana to an incredible Week 1 victory. Penix believes the right call was made, while Clifford argues he was down short of the end zone.

No matter how many times that play is viewed, it’s impossible to tell who is right. It will go down as one of the most controversial calls in the B1G. And Penix and Clifford will probably never agree.
That win sparked a 6-2 campaign for Indiana, one of the best years in program history. Penn State dropped their first five games before winning the final four to close out the season.
The controversial ending to last season’s game should add another layer of interest to this year’s meeting between the Hoosiers and Nittany Lions on Oct. 2 in Happy Valley.
