While understanding that this is an unprecedented situation due to COVID-19, Urban Meyer has never been a fan of the eye test when it comes to the College Football Playoffs.

Alabama (7-0), Notre Dame (8-0), Clemson (7-1), and Ohio State (4-0) landed in the top 4 of the first edition of the rankings.

Already, there’s heavy debate about Clemson behind ahead of Ohio State and if the SEC can wind up with two teams in the playoffs.

The two-time national championship coach is well aware that with the scheduling inconsistencies the committee will its hands full.

However, Meyer explained why he’s not in favor of the committee merely going with its gut.

“The term, and I really hate it, the two words “eye test.” I think it’s going to be more important than ever. Eye test is going to be critical,” Meyer said. “What are you looking at when you say “eye test?” What is that? It’s too subjective. I love objectivity, I love truth, I love when science backs us up and that’s almost impossible to do when you’re dealing with a committee. What are you looking at would be my question.”

There’s definitely some discussion-worthy arguments to be made about the rankings. Undefeated Northwestern is slotted eighth behind one-loss SEC teams in Texas A&M and Florida.

Meyer guided Ohio State to its last national title in 2015 during the inaugural CFP. Now, Ohio State is looking to avenge last season’s defeat against Clemson in the semifinals.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see how everything shakes out and what the final four will be.
