Maryland no longer has lone possession of the B1G regular season title. With a loss to Rutgers on Tuesday night, the race for the top spot in the conference is wide open.
Rutgers handed Maryland a 78-67 loss at The RAC, an important win for the Scarlet Knights, who are trying to solidify their spot in the NCAA Tournament. But the loss was devastating to the Terrapins’ hopes of winning an outright regular season title. Now, there’s a good possibility they’ll have to share it.
Because not only did Maryland lose on Tuesday, Michigan State posted a 79-71 victory on the road at Penn State to knot things up in the standings. Now, both the Terrapins and Spartans sit at 13-6 in the B1G standings, each with one game remaining.
It could get even more crowded at the top.
Wisconsin and Illinois both have a chance to get to 13-6 this week, as well. And, if it happens, there would be a four-way tie atop the league standings. The Badgers host Northwestern on Wednesday night, while the Fighting Illini travel to Columbus to take on the Buckeyes. Both are currently 12-6 on the season.
If all four teams are tied heading into the weekend, then there’s also the possibility that the season ends in a four-way tie atop the standings. While it may be unlikely, none of those four teams play each other in the final weekend of the regular season. It should create some incredible drama heading into the B1G Tournament next week.
Just when you thought the B1G basketball season couldn’t get any weirder.
