Three B1G players have been named semi-finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, an honor that goes to college football’s top defensive back.

A press release came out on Monday morning which listed the 13 semi-finalists for the award. Three of those names came from B1G country, as Penn State’s Grant Haley and Marcus Allen made the cut, as well as Ohio State’s Denzel Ward.

The B1G was tied with the SEC and ACC, all of which had three players make the semi-finalist list. Penn State and Alabama were the only teams to have multiple selections.

The list of 13 semi-finalists will be narrowed down to three finalists on Nov. 20 and the winner will be announced on live on Dec. 7 during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN.

Allen has recorded 40 tackles this season, as well as four stops for loss, two forced fumbles and an interception through seven games. Haley has made just 19 tackles but has two interceptions and broken up six passes.

Ward has 20 tackles with nine pass break-ups and an interception on the season.

The winner will also be honored at a banquet in Oklahoma City in February 2018.
