Losing your black stripe is a badge of honor.

It’s a symbol that Urban Meyer has used since his days at Bowling Green. Incoming freshman place a thin, black stripe on their helmet and are only allowed to remove it when they’ve “earned” the right to become a member of the team.

That’s when freshmen officially become a Buckeye.

So far, three freshman have had their black stripe removed this season. J.K. Dobbins was the first on Aug. 3, followed by Isaiah Pryor, who became a Buckeye on Aug. 7. Chase Young is the most recent, losing his stripe on Aug. 9.

Dobbins is a four-star all-purpose back out of Texas and was ranked as the sixth-best player from his home state. Pryor, a safety, is a Florida native who attended IMG Academy.

Young, who was one of Ohio State’s five-star recruits, was ranked as No. 6 player overall, the second-best defensive end and the top player out of Maryland.
