Tim Brando talks College Football Playoff, calls for change to ‘exclusionary’ system

College football broadcaster Tim Brando has seen enough.
Following a mostly-uneventful Championship Saturday, Brando called for sweeping changes to college football’s postseason system.
He cited a lack of accountability for the selection committee and the complete absence of opportunity for Group of 5 teams, calling the system “exclusionary.”
“The reality of college football’s postseason is that it’s flawed. In fact, so much so now that I think we could actually use the ‘C’ word: College football’s postseason is corrupt,” Brando said. “You can not get a straight answer from anyone who represents that committee when legitimate questions are asked. How else does a team that’s undefeated like Cincinnati get no shot, and see two-loss teams pass them by, year after year, month after month, as this dreaded system keeps rolling by.”
In addition to the Bearcats, who defeated a ranked Tulsa team to with the AAC late Saturday night, Brando put a spotlight on San Jose State.
The Spartans beat Boise State to win the Mountain West on Saturday, but they haven’t received much discussion this year despite fighting through extraordinary adversity.
San Jose State hasn’t been able to practice or play at its home facility due to COVID-19 restrictions all season, but still went 7-0.
“Could you imagine, how much more it would mean if a team like them, from the Group of 5, could be playing for something great? Hopefully college football down the road will do that,” Brando said.
Perhaps some day that will happen, but it doesn’t figure to be this year. This is likely to be the sixth straight year that includes three of the four of Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State or Oklahoma. The Playoff has included three of those four programs in every year of its existence except for the first one.
