Indiana will be down an assistant coach heading into spring practice. Wide receivers coach Grant Heard is leaving for Central Florida.

UCF’s hiring of Heard was reported Wednesday night. The hiring has not been officially announced by Central Florida and Heard has yet to update his Twitter account, but Allen confirmed the news in his Thursday media opportunity.

The Hoosier head coach discussed the timeline for hiring Heard’s replacement. Indiana opens spring practice on Saturday.

“Yeah, it definitely wasn’t something I was expecting,” Allen said, per Alec Lasley of TheHoosier.com. “I do think obviously we’ll not have somebody in place for Saturday or probably the first two — the Tuesday, Thursday following that, so the first three practices I wouldn’t expect that to be the case.

“But the goal would be to have someone in place — when we come back from spring break, once we hit the field, that practice No. 4, to have that person in place.”

Heard was on staff at Indiana since 2017. He and Allen also worked together at Lambuth, Arkansas State and Ole Miss.
