Tom Allen’s defense is leaving a lot to be desired, and there is little for Penn State fans to be happy about through the first half of the action in Saturday’s contest against the Bowling Green Falcons.

This was expected to be a cakewalk for a No. 8 Nittany Lions team that impressed so much in last week’s dominant, 34-12 victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers on the road. Unfortunately, Week 2 has been anything but a cakewalk as Bowling Green led, 24-20 at the half.

Quarterback Drew Allar looked like a Heisman Trophy candidate in the first week of the 2024 college football season, and while the team has faltered overall, the signal-caller and his side of the ball seem to be hardly to blame for it.

The blame has been placed for more on the defense and specifically on the new DC for the Nittany Lions’ shortcomings. Through two quarters, Penn State allowed some 288 yards of total offense from the Falcons. If this type of issue is not corrected sooner rather than later, the Nittany Lions will go from a team once projected to be a College Football Playoff contender to one that will quickly fall from grace.
