Tom Izzo had his team face off against Tennessee in a closed scrimmage recently. He’s feeling good about the team’s progress despite how nervous that makes him feel per The State News’ Melanie Soverinsky.

Michigan State traveled to Knoxville to take on the Volunteers at Thompson-Boling Arena. He complimented Tennessee on its play during the game. Izzo noted how the Spartans held their own while facing a very tough Tennessee team.

I’m nervous to say that the last couple weeks I think my team has really made some progress. Tennessee, I thought we played very well. They’re a very good, very well coached, very big, very good shooting team and yet we held their own and did the things that we had to do.

Michigan State’s season doesn’t start until Nov. 7 with Northern Arizona. After that the Spartans begin a tough non-conference slate with Gonzaga, Kentucky, Villanova, Alabama, and Notre Dame.

This was a good test for Izzy’s team, but things are only going to get harder once the regular season starts.
