Tom Izzo is heading into another year as Michigan State’s basketball coach. He spoke with WXZY Detroit’s Brad Galli about a couple of topics.

Izzo has been getting asked about his potential retirement and when it will be ever since B1G Media Days. Izzo confirmed that he is not thinking about retirement right now.

“I’m just so excited,” said Izzo. “I have no thoughts of retiring. Maybe that’s the good news and the bad news.  Depends on what side of the bench you’re on.”

One thing that could be keeping Izzo in East Lansing is wanting to hoist another banner in the rafters. The Spartans have not won the B1G Tournament since 2019, but Michigan State does have the most titles with six.

Izzo stated that the chance of lifting a Final Four or NCAA Championship banner outweighs retirement. The last time that the Spartans won the NCAA Tournament was in 2000 against Florida.

“It totally does,” said Izzo. “I love my job, I love being in the gym, I love the players. Right now, I get to coach. It’s not my alma mater, but it’s close.”

Michigan State plays Gonzaga Friday in the Armed Forces Classic at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
