Tommy DeVito confirmed the news that was expected on Wednesday.
Addressing the media for Illinois’ bowl preparation, DeVito announced that his waiver for an additional year of eligibility was denied by the NCAA. He was trying to return to the Illini for one more season in 2023, but he’ll begin preparing for the NFL Draft next week.

DeVito transferred to Bret Bielema’s Illinois program after starting his career at Syracuse. He set a new career-high with 2,397 passing yards this season and added 15 touchdowns for the Illini.
Illinois will get one more game with DeVito during the ReliaQuest Bowl against Mississippi State on Monday. Unfortunately, the news also puts an added urgency on Illinois to find a starting QB for 2023, a position Bielema and his staff will likely look for via the transfer portal.
