Illinois’ top commitment for 2020 is not going to sign during the Early Signing Period that opens Wednesday. However, indications are that he will still sign with the Illini during the Regular Signing Period.
The player is an in-state receiver and four-star prospect Jadon Thompson. He is rated as the No. 5 player out of Illinois for 2020 on the 247 Sports Composite Rankings. Thompson received offers from Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Purdue among other Power 5 offers.

On Wednesday, Ryan Evan with Illini Pulse reported a conversation with Thompson where Thompson indicated he will not sign this week. Fortunately, his intentions are still to sign in February after working through some “mistakes” that he is correcting:
Spoke to Jadon Thompson (@Jay_Thompson5) #illini Commit who won’t sign tomorrow. Tells me he plans to sign in February and nothing to worry about. He loves Illinois and “Made some childish mistakes that he is correcting”
Simmer down if anyone thinks he won’t be an #illini

Thompson even responded to one fan comment on Twitter, with a simple message of “Don’t worry:”

Hopefully, this is just a simple delay in Thompson’s eventual signing with Illinois. With the inception of the Early Signing Period, most players currently committed will sign this week, but that is by no means a requirement.
Thompson is currently the top-rated commit for the Illini in 2020.
