Wednesday the Arizona Cardinals announced that they have signed former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley as a backup to starter Kyler Murray.

Backup quarterback Colt McCoy is out with a calf injury.

“It’s unfortunate,” Murray said. “It was kind of starting the week off on a downer, someone getting hurt, someone you care about. On his birthday, it’s tough. But it’s good. Trace is good, he’s ready to go. I’m focused on executing on Sunday.”

McSorely was with the practice team with the Cardinals and came to the team last year. Before that, McSorely was with the Baltimore Ravens for a couple of years.

McSorely was a 3-time 2nd-team B1G selection during his time with Penn State and the Cardinals seem to be comfortable with McSorely on their roster.

McCoy has spent the majority of his career as a backup but he has started for a few NFL teams over the years.

McCoy did come in briefly for the Cards last year when Murray hurt his ankle and went 2-1. The good news is that McSorely took a lot of the snaps behind center during the preseason, so he knows and should be comfortable in this offense.
