Travis Vokolek was optimistic about the chances for Nebraska’s offense to account for a big game against the top-ranked scoring defense in the nation. Outside of one big scoring play, Nebraska’s offense had a lackluster performance in the 26-9 home loss to Illinois.
After the game, Vokolek opened up about the offensive plan that interim head coach Mickey Joseph and offensive coordinator Mark Whipple put together. According to Vokolek, the plan had the players in a position to make plays, but the players didn’t come through:
“Coach Whip and Coach Mick put us in position to go out and make plays, and we just didn’t do it.”

Nebraska only accounted for 248 total yards and 9 first downs against the elite defense of Illinois. The Cornhuskers turned the ball over 4 times, with 2 interceptions thrown by Casey Thompson and 1 from Chubba Purdy.
Vokolek caught 1 reception for 56 yards which went for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter from Thompson. That was the longest offensive play of the game for both teams.
The injury to Thompson in the first half drastically changed the outlook of the Nebraska offense, but Vokolek isn’t making excuses. Unfortunately, the team just didn’t make enough plays in the second half.
Nebraska (3-5; 2-3 in B1G play) is set to host Minnesota (5-3; 2-3) in Week 10.
