Iowa has announced that two defensive players have decided to opt out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The school released a statement on Monday afternoon.
Junior linebacker Djimon Colbert and redshirt freshman defensive lineman Taajhir McCall have elected not to play this season due to the pandemic. Head coach Kirk Ferentz confirmed that both players have decided to not partake in the season and have completed the necessary paperwork.
Colbert was the fourth-leading tackler for the Hawkeyes during the 2019 campaign, racking up 61 stops, including 2.5 for loss. He also tallied 4 pass break-ups and an interception last fall, as Iowa finished the year with a 10-3 record.
In 2018, Colbert was responsible for 52 tackles.
McCall was a member of Iowa’s 2019 recruiting class and did not play in any games as a true freshman for the Hawkeyes. He did retain his redshirt status.
Iowa is scheduled to open up the 2020 season on the road against Purdue.
