A pair of potential starters on Michigan’s defense have missed the early portion of fall camp, according to a report from MLive.com.
On Wednesday, media made their way to Ann Arbor to check in on the Wolverines after a few days into fall camp. While the team sounds like it’s pretty health ahead of the 2019 season, there are a few key guys who have been sidelined with injuries early.
Cornerback Ambry Thomas and defensive lineman Michael Dwumfour have both missed the first few days of camp with injuries. Thought the nature of Thomas’s injury is unknown, it sounds like his could potentially be more serious than Dwumfour’s.
Jim Harbaugh has said that Thomas is “working through something,” but has left the specifics of the injury unmentioned. There has not been a timetable set for his return.
Thomas was expected to be in contention for a starting role at the cornerback spot this season. Last fall, he registered nine tackles and a pass breakup in a backup role. Thomas was also the team’s primary kick returner.
Dwumfour made an appearance on the field early in camp but has been held out recently, also with an unspecified situation. The defensive lineman missed a good portion of the spring season while rehabbing from a torn plantar fascia from last season.
He’s expected to return to practice Thursday.
Dwumfour ended last season with 21 tackles, three sacks and an interception on Michigan’s defensive line. He’ll have an even bigger role this fall with so many key departures along the front line.
