The University of Cincinnati has made the difficult decision to cut one of its athletics programs.
On Tuesday, Cincinnati Athletic Director John Cunningham announced that the school would be discontinuing its men’s soccer program. He says that the decision was made for the long-term interest of the athletics department.
“This was a difficult decision, but one made with the long-term interests of UC Athletics at the forefront. During this time of profound uncertainty, I have engaged in a comprehensive and thorough review of UC’s sports offerings and long-term budge implications of supporting the number of student-athletes currently at UC,” Cunningham said in a statement. “Based on this review, and in consultation with President Pinto and other University leaders, UC Athletics will no longer sponsor a men’s soccer program.”

With the COVID-19 pandemic causing the cancellation of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament and threatening the college football season, one of the consequences could be an uptick in the discontinuation of certain sports on campuses. Cincinnati is one of the first schools to make a move.
Depending on how long the pandemic continues to sideline sports, there could be many more cuts to follow.
