College football lost a legend on Sunday with the news that former Florida State head coach and Hall of Famer Bobby Bowden died at the age of 91.

Several from around the world of college football offered thoughts, prayers and condolences after learning of Bowden’s death. Former Florida, Ohio State and current Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer was one of many individuals to release a statement on the sad news.

Meyer, who coached against Bowden’s teams in the fiery Florida-Florida State rivalry series in the 2000s, called the Florida State icon a friend and mentor.

“Today, we lost a legend,” Meyer wrote on Twitter. “Bobby was a great friend and mentor to me, and his impact transcended the coaching profession in so many ways. Sending love to Ann and the entire Bowden family. Rest in Peace Coach Bowden.”

In over three decades at Florida State, Bowden won two national championships (1993 and 1999). His Seminoles teams claimed 12 ACC titles and appeared in a bowl game in all but three seasons.

Bowden was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
