They say there’s a fraternity among college football head coaches, a mutual respect among the group of leaders in the sport. And while former Ohio State head coach and current Miami (OH) head coach Chuck Martin both belong to it, they don’t necessarily see eye to eye.
Earlier this week, Martin was asked about the upcoming matchup with Ohio State — a daunting task for the RedHawks. He said that none of his players were even recruited by the Buckeyes, and said “it’s like going to recess and they get the first 85 picks.”
Meyer isn’t a fan of sending that kind of message before the game. Having been the head coach at smaller programs like Bowling Green and Utah (before it joined the Pac-12), Meyer doesn’t really think it’s necessary.
“I don’t know if I agree with making a public statement like that, whether you believe it or not,” Meyer said on BTN. “You don’t have to beat Ohio State, what you have to do is win a bunch of individual battles and hang in there in a game like that.”
Ohio State enters this game as a 39.5-point favorite and has a huge advantage in the talent department. While Martin’s statement may be true, it seems like an off-putting thing to say, especially the week before the game.
Just a guess, but Meyer probably didn’t say anything quite like that in his career, even when he was at those smaller schools.
