Urban Meyer is standing by the character of his defensive coordinator Greg Schiano.
During his weekly press conference on Monday, Meyer was asked about the situation at Tennessee and the fan outrage that bubbled after the Volunteers planned to make Schiano their next head coach. While the Ohio State coach didn’t have much to say, he did refer to Schiano’s character as “elite” multiple times.
“He’s an elite person, elite father, elite husband, elite friend and elite football coach,” Meyer said. “I stand by my coach.”
Meyer brought Schiano to Columbus prior to the 2016 season and he’s been the defensive coordinator for the Buckeyes each of the last two seasons. Meyer did not want to comment any further on the situation.
Schiano was reportedly going to be named the next head coach of Tennessee on Sunday, but after protests erupted in Knoxville, the university backed away from the deal and began searching for new candidates. Schiano is now seeking compensation for the situation.
