Urban Meyer has coached some of the most prominent quarterbacks in college football throughout his career. Names like Tim Tebow, Alex Smith, J.T. Barrett and Dwayne Haskins are all associated with the three-time national champion.

So, when he offers his opinion on what he looks for in a quarterback, it’s probably wise to listen. And in a recent interview with Big Ten Network, Meyer couldn’t help but gush over one of his former opponents, Trace McSorley.

As a three-year starter at Penn State, McSorley rewrote the Nittany Lions’ record books and guided the program to a B1G title in 2016, thanks in large part to an upset win over Ohio State in 2016. Now, he’s made the 53-man roster with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens heading into Week 1 of the regular season.

What makes McSorley so good? Meyer says he possesses everything you look for in a quarterback.

“I love Trace McSorley,” Meyer said.

“The No. 1 characteristic of all great quarterbacks is they’re elite competitors. They win at all costs, in everything. No. 2, are the tough? To win a big game, a national championship-type game. No. 3, are you intelligent? Do you have leadership skills? No. 4 and No. 5, can you escape and make something out of nothing? Trace McSorley is five-for-five. He had big games against us and I just think he’s an elite competitor.”

McSorley often earned the respect among B1G coaches as the ultimate competitor. He’s carried that trait into the NFL, and its resulted in him carving out a roster spot with the Ravens.
