Urban Meyer says Kyle McCord’s transfer makes no sense: ‘It just doesn’t compute’

Urban Meyer still is unsure what went into Kyle McCord’s decision to transfer out of Ohio State. In spite of an 11-1 record as the starter this season, McCord is looking to leave the Buckeyes via the portal.
During the latest episode of “Urban’s Take with Tim May,” the former head coach admitted he’s still struggling to wrap his mind around the decision. It’s a move that Meyer does not believe makes sense for McCord or Ohio State at this point.
“That made no sense,” said Meyer. “I’m still trying to comprehend it. I tried to take a position of Kyle or even Ohio State, and it just doesn’t compute.”
As a part of his explanation, Meyer pointed to what he described as “a good year” for McCord in 2023. Meyer addressed the comeback win over Notre Dame and said the 2 interceptions by McCord in The Game “weren’t his fault” for a number of reasons.
“I’m trying to make it compute because I want to be empathetic, and I want to say, ‘OK, I understand.’ There’s no place better for Kyle than Ohio State,” Meyer said. “That place does not exist unless he’s being guaranteed a starting spot. But once again, I don’t agree with that’s the best place. I think iron sharpens iron; steel sharpens steel. The best thing that anybody can ever do is go and compete your tail off, get better, and maximize who you are as a player.
“I’m not ripping Kyle at all because I don’t know him. I admire him and think he was in a tough situation all year. But yeah, I didn’t dig in too hard because I don’t want to. But it does not compute with me — I guess I love Ohio State, and I think competition brings out the best in you.”
Meyer wrapped things up by saying he would admit if McCord winds up at a better place than OSU, but he doesn’t expect that.
“If he goes to a better place than Ohio State, I’ll be the first one to say he’s going to a better place,” said Meyer. “I just don’t know.”
Here is the conversation with the OSU QB chatter beginning around the 9-minute mark:
