Washington and Washington State have met 114 times in their historic in-state rivalry. The Apple Cup rivalry dates back to 190o as one of the iconic rivalry games in all of college football.

The future of that rivalry came under question with the decision for Washington to leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten beginning in 2024. However, the two schools confirmed in a Sunday press release that the Apple Cup will continue.

Per that release, the two teams will face off annually through at least 2028 as a part of a 5-year continuation of the rivalry. The 2024 game will be played at Lumen Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks, and the remaining games will be played at the traditional on-campus sites.

Washington State will host the game in 2025 and 2027 while Washington will host 2026 and 2028 in Seattle.

“The Apple Cup is one of the oldest and most renowned rivalries in all of collegiate athletics,” said WSU President Kirk Schulz. “For more than a century, fans across the state have been circling the Apple Cup date on their calendars. We are pleased that we will be able to continue this beloved tradition for future generations of Coug fans.”

“The Apple Cup tradition is beloved by Huskies, Cougars and football fans across Washington and beyond, so one of my priorities has been to ensure that it continues into this new era,” said University of Washington President Ana Mari Cauce. “I’m thrilled that we’ll be able to continue this tradition, and to kick off the new era at Lumen Field before returning to each campus. I’m grateful to Troy, our colleagues at Washington State University and our partners at First & Goal, Inc. for collaborating to make this happen. This is a win for our fans, our universities and the state of Washington.”

As for the play on the field, Washington has dominated the all-time series with a 75-33-6 advantage over the Cougars. The Huskies have won 8 of the last 9 games, including a 51-33 victory in Pullman during the 2022 season.

The two sides will face off this Saturday at 1 p.m. PT with the broadcast carried on FOX.
