Washington wins 2nd straight Apple Cup behind swarming defensive effort

This year’s Apple Cup wasn’t quite as high-scoring as last year’s, but the end result was all the same. The Washington Huskies are 1-0 on the year after a dominant defensive effort dispatched the Washington State Cougars, 24-10.
Neither team moved the ball particularly well on Sunday. Washington QB Demond Williams Jr. was the only consistent source of offense for UW, accounting for 1 rushing touchdown and 1 passing touchdown while throwing for 268 yards and rushing for 61.

The Huskies entered the halftime break leading 10-0 despite being held to 0 points on a goal-line stand as time expired.
Despite making some stops, Washington State was unable to score until the 4th quarter thanks to Washington’s swarming defense. The Cougars finished the game 0-9 on 3rd down and posted just 228 yards of total offense as the Huskies forced 3 turnovers — 1 fumble and 2 interceptions. That’s not going to win you many games, Wazzu.
As for Washington, there’s definitely a lot to clean up. Despite Williams finding some success, the Huskies run game was largely unremarkable. Washington’s trio of running backs combined for 76 yards and 1 touchdown on 21 carries — an average of 3.6 yards per carry.
The No. 17 Huskies will be back in action on Saturday with a matchup against Utah State and Husky Stadium in Seattle.
