Northwestern’s Week 2 game against Duke started well.

The Wildcats got an opening touchdown to make it 7-0. From that point on, however, the Blue Devils took control.

It was 7-7 midway through the second quarter and senior QB Clayton Thorson threw a deep pass on 3rd and 8. It got picked.

That wasn’t really the worst of it, though.

Following Thorson’s INT, wide receiver Cameron Green went to make the tackle and this happened:

Call Green’s intentional or call it a mistake. In the end, his hit drew a flag for targeting and ended up being ejected. Each week there’s a controversial targeting call that gets a player thrown out of a game.

Is it possible to make a system where it takes two targeting calls to eject a player? Maybe a Targeting 1 and Targeting 2 type of system like flagrant fouls in the NBA?

Until something changes, plays like these will end up in players being tossed. For better or for worse.
