No matter how often videos are posted of walk-on players being surprised with scholarships, we’ll never get sick of them.
On Thursday, it was Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck’s chance to surprise one of his hard-working defenders, and he did so in dramatic fashion, pausing the Gophers’ spring game to let redshirt junior DE Sam Renner know he would be receiving a scholarship.
Below, the Big Ten Network recaps the moment, showing the Gophers celebrating with Renner and then asking him about it afterward:

“It was an absolute dream,” he said. “Coming from a hometown city, Maple Grove, only 30 minutes away, I decided to walk on to the Gophers. It’s something you always dream of happening, but you never know if it’s actually going to happen. But it finally came true after three years here.”
This isn’t the first time Fleck has surprised a player with a scholarship, and hopefully it won’t be the last.
