Who says bowl games don’t matter?
Saturday was full of college football, but there wasn’t a more entertaining game than the Birmingham Bowl between Memphis and Wake Forest. It provide excitement down to the very last play.
Memphis jumped out to a 28-10 lead in the first half and was in complete control. But 20 straight points from Wake Forest gave the Demon Deacons a 30-28 advantage heading into the final quarter. And that’s when things got really entertaining.
The Tigers scored on a nine-yard run from Patrick Taylor Jr., taking a 34-30 lead with 1:15 left in the game. But Wake forest responded quickly and took a 37-34 advantage with just :34 remaining. And yet, Memphis still had an opportunity to win.
Memphis set up for a 38-yard field goal attempt for Riley Patterson. He knocked home the first one, but Wake Forest called timeout before the snap. Then, the Tigers were flagged for a false start, pushing the attempt to 43 yards.
On Patterson’s final attempt, he pushed the ball to the right. Wake Forest recorded the 37-34 victory and finished the 2018 campaign 7-6.
