Illinois took the field in front of fans for the first time under new head coach Bret Bielema on Monday night, as the program embarks on a new era. There was certainly something to like from the team’s annual spring game.
The first team offense and defense dominated the game from start to finish, controlling the line of scrimmage, making big plays through the air and showing the ability to pick up chunks of yardage on the ground. Quarterback Brandon Peters looked sharp and the receiver room stood out.
Of course, it’s always difficult to gauge how good a team might be based on a spring game. It’s especially tough when first-teamers are going up against backups through most of the game. But the Fighting Illini starters were dominant, and that’s a positive sign moving forward.
Bielema had the chance to speak with reporters briefly following the conclusion of the spring game. Here’s what he had to say about his team’s performance on Monday night:
#illini Bret Bielema: Wanted ball security, few penalties, tackling and catching the ball. Did all of those pretty well.

#illini Bret Bielema: Luke Ford has really matured in everything he's doing. Really like his demeanor and work ethic. Has a big personality but he's concentrating on what's important now: being a good student and football player.

#illini Bret Bielema: Obviously, Brandon continues to be impressive. Had a dip in Week Two. Isaiah played well behind Orange OL. Competition will continue. We'll see where we're at after 15 practices.

#illini Bret Bielema: I think (Brandon Peters) has exceptional arm talent. I think he's a very accurate guy with the ball. … Parts of the game we have to keep pushing at him.

#illini Bret Bielema: Donny Navarro I think is truly going to be a really good player and has exceled really well in this system.

#illini Bret Bielema: The last two weeks for Carlos Sandy have been very productive. … He's grown every practice.
