A fast start and tough defense resulted in another impressive win for Illinois as the Illini upset No. 20 Minnesota, 14-6, on Saturday in Minneapolis.
Illinois (4-6, 3-4 Big Ten) grabbed a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter and finished with six sacks and two interceptions in a strong defensive effort against the Gophers (6-3, 4-2). Minnesota’s only points came on a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
It was the second top-25 road win in three weeks for Illinois, which remains in position to become bowl eligible. Two weeks ago, the Illini edged No. 7 Penn State, 20-18, in nine overtimes.
