It looked like Nebraska was really starting to make some progress in Week 4 against Penn State as the Huskers got that evasive first win of the season.
Then, all that talk of improvement hit a wall as Nebraska was blown out at home by Illinois. The talk of effort started to be questioned.
That leads us to this week. The Huskers are tasked with putting the Illini game behind them in a short week while Nebraska goes up against rival Iowa on Friday as the Huskers look to extract some revenge after losing each of the past two games against the Hawkeyes on last-second field goals.
Nebraska head coach Scott Frost held his weekly press conference on Monday. The talk of effort and progress still remains a major point of contention for Frost. He spoke about his team’s energy not only during Saturday’s loss but in the days leading up to it.
Scott Frost said it's on the coaches to coach urgency into players. Said it's a young team that hopefully won't experience that kind of lull again.
"Energy's way better."

Scott Frost continues the Nebraska theme that they had a bad week of practice before Illinois, energy "way better" in practice this week.
“We’ve got a young team that thought they won one game (vs. Penn State) and everything was good. … That’s not the way this game works.”

Frost: "The intensity’s better. That’s what we need when we play any game, especially Iowa.”

Scott Frost on Nebraska's lack of energy last week in practice and how to fix it: "We've got coach that into them."
— Mitch Sherman (@mitchsherman) November 23, 2020
Frost says progress is evident inside the walls but it has to show up on the field. “We’re so much better in so many ways, but we weren’t Saturday, and that’s what frustrates me.”

Offensively, the Huskers are surely a young team, especially when it comes to quarterback and wide receiver. Frost is in the midst of developing these players and trying to turn them into star players he’s previously coached.
I asked if Nebraska's QBs are far off from where Frost guys like Mariota, Milton and Herbert (whom Frost recruited). He said McCaffrey and Martinez are. But the coaches, Frost said, have to do a better job of putting them in position to be that good.
— Sam McKewon (@swmckewonOWH) November 23, 2020
Frost: "There's no doubt in my mind that Luke McCaffrey is the future around here."
Then notes Nebraska must play the QB that gives it the best chance to win. Martinez has been playing with a "chip" on his shoulder.

Frost maintains his stance on his young WRs. "We got the kids in the program that are going to be great receivers … but our quarterbacks have to trust them and they have to be in the right spot … And we're working toward that every day, and it was better today."

Frost also provided an update on Collin Miller, the senior linebacker who suffered a scary spinal injury on Saturday and was carted off.
Collin Miller at practice, didn't practice Monday. It is doubtful he is to return this season.
"His health's the most important thing." #huskers
— Sam McKewon (@swmckewonOWH) November 23, 2020
Frost describes Collin Miller's injury as a spinal concussion. "He just took a hit in the exact wrong way."
— Mitch Sherman (@mitchsherman) November 23, 2020
Now, it’s time to look forward for Frost. He sees a talented Iowa team ahead of him that’s getting hot at the right time.
Scott Frost mentions having great respect for Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa program.
“They’re going to make you earn it, man. They’re a physical team.”

Adds: “We shouldn’t need to be playing a rival to prepare well. But if that’s what it takes, I hope it helps this week.” https://t.co/zbkKCf7BNn
