The No.9 Ohio State Buckeyes are coming off a loss at home to the No.4 Oregon Ducks.
The Buckeyes lost to the Ducks 35-28 despite the Ducks having two of their best players out in DE Kayvon Thibodeaux and LB Justin Flowe.
The Buckeyes won their first conference game as they defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers 45-31 to open the season they are 1-1.
Ryan Day spoke to the media today ahead of the game against the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes this Saturday.
Day talked about how the Buckeyes need to improve on defense as it has not just been a one-game blip.
Day on the defensive problems: “It’s not just a single game. It’s a little bit of a pattern. We took a long hard look the last 48 hrs and certainly will make some adjustments.”

Ryan Day on the defense: “We’re going to make some adjustments here structurally.”
— Bill Landis (@BillLandis25) September 14, 2021

Day gives an update on why CB Sevyn Banks has not been playing the past 2 games.
Asked if there’s any reason other than injury Sevyn Banks hasn’t been playing, Ryan Day said there isn’t. Banks hasn’t been listed among the unavailable players for either of the first two games.

When talking about DC Kerry Coombs, Day did not hold back.
Ryan Day, given a chance to provide a level of confidence to DC Kerry Coombs, chooses not to go there. “When you look at the results over the last couple games and then coming off last year, it’s not what we expect here.”
Wow.

Ryan Day not elaborating on what structural changes will take place on defense, including whether it means changes on the staff. Sounds like anything in on the table.

#Buckeyes coach Ryan Day, asked point blank by @DougLesmerises if Kerry Coombs will call the defense this weekend, declines to say. “No hard decisions have been made.”
— Adam Rittenberg (@ESPNRittenberg) September 14, 2021
Despite all of that Kerry Coombs is still the DC for the Buckeyes.
Asked if Kerry Coombs is still the defensive coordinator, Day laughs and says, “Yes, he’s still the defensive coordinator. But we’re going to look at everything.”

Here is the rest of what Ryan Day said at today’s press conference:
Day, asked about whether #Buckeyes should keep their defensive starters on the field more, says, “If they’re playing at a high level, it wouldn’t be a question.”
— Adam Rittenberg (@ESPNRittenberg) September 14, 2021
Ryan Day: “This loss doesn’t sit well at all. We wanted to win this game, and we had it circled for a long time, so we’re very disappointed.”
— Dan Hope (@Dan_Hope) September 14, 2021
Ryan Day on Ohio State’s loss to Oregon: “You find out about their true character. It’s one thing when things are going well . . . but when something goes bad, you find out who people are.”
— Justin Holbrock (@NBC4Justin) September 14, 2021
#Buckeyes coach Ryan Day on the tone of his conversations with the defensive staff: “Honest. I wouldn’t say they’re uncomfortable. They’re real. … I have no problem having those kinds of conversations. It’s pretty simple, to see what needs to get fixed.”
— Adam Rittenberg (@ESPNRittenberg) September 14, 2021
Day said C.J. Stroud “made some throws I haven’t seen from a young quarterback in a long time.”
— Bill Rabinowitz (@brdispatch) September 14, 2021
Day said he’s disappointed to have to spend a lot of time with the defense because it takes him away from what he does and knows best, which is offense.
