Falling behind 14-0 after the first quarter, the Michigan Wolverines found themselves in a 28-0 hole at halftime of Saturday’s 35-14 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.
Allowing a one-yard Jonathan Taylor touchdown on the first drive of the game, the Wolverines had a chance to tie the game on their first drive when sophomore wide receiver Ronnie Bell set up 1st & Goal at the Wisconsin seven-yard line with a 68-yard catch.
Instead, junior defensive end/fullback Ben Mason put the football on the turf and the Badgers recovered. Michigan has lost a fumble on their opening drive in all three games in 2019.
Appearing on “Inside Michigan Football” on WXYZ ABC – Detroit, two Michigan safeties, junior Brad Hawkins and senior Josh Metellus, spoke with radio play-by-play broadcaster Jim Brandstatter about the team’s slow start:
Brad Hawkins on Inside Michigan Football: "We definitely came out sluggish and definitely came out slow"

Metellus on Inside Michigan Football: "We didn't come out ready to play. I feel as a whole team we weren't ready to match their energy or have more energy than they did. We came out flat and they took advantage."

Surrendering a startling 359 yards on the ground, all five of the touchdowns Wisconsin scored were of the rushing variety.
Michigan didn’t record their first points of the afternoon until late in the third quarter when senior quarterback Shea Patterson found redshirt senior tight end Sean McKeon for a six-yard score.
Now 2-1 on the season, Michigan hosts Rutgers (1-2) on Saturday (12:00PM ET, BTN).
Improving to 3-0 with the win, Wisconsin next battles 1-2 Northwestern (12:00PM ET, ABC).
