Wisconsin and new head coach Luke Fickell have already landed one quarterback recruit via the transfer portal. Now, the Badgers are trending as the early favorite to land another key QB in the portal.
Already, the Badgers have landed former 4-star prospect and ex-Oklahoma QB Nick Evers. He may soon be joined by a QB out of SMU in Wisconsin’s offense for 2023.
Tanner Mordecai — a veteran QB with nearly 7,800 career passing yards for the Mustangs — landed in the portal Thursday evening. According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Mordecai is expected to head to Madison to play in Phil Longo’s offensive system under Fickell.
#SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai entered the transfer portal earlier tonight and is expected to land at #Wisconsin, according to sources. Would be a huge pickup for Luke Fickell and OC Phil Longo.

Mordecai was a 4-star prospect coming out of high school via the 2018 recruiting class. He was a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award this past season while throwing for 3,524 yards and 33 touchdowns. Mordecai also threw for over 3,600 yards with 39 touchdowns in 2021.
It goes without saying, but bringing a QB with Mordecai’s experience and production would be a huge win for Fickell’s first season with the Badgers.
