Clay Cundiff suffered one of the most gruesome injuries anyone can sustain in the sports world. But he’s not letting that stand in the way of making a return to the field in 2022.

Last season, Cundiff suffered a dislocated ankle, a broken fibula and a torn ligament in the foot in Wisconsin’s game against Iowa. As he lay on the field, his teammates frantically called for the medical team to tend to the injured tight end.

“When it happened, I definitely knew something was wrong,” Cundiff said, per Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “And then I looked down and my foot was backwards.”

Cundiff missed the remainder of the season for the Badgers. But by summer, the tight end expects to be back at full strength.

Cundiff told reporters he was excited to be back on the field and working again. This week marked the first time since the injury that he’s been able to run at 100% speed, too.

Last season marked the first time Cundiff saw substantial playing time for the Badgers. He caught 3 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. He’s hoping to carve out an even bigger role this season.
